That Deep

This exhibition follows my self-led education on the media I consume, especially media which comments on its own production. This meta-media is increasingly prevalent in general pop culture, and understanding the methods and purposes behind it has led me to a more engaged and nuanced relationship to new media which crosses my path.
My perspective on the subject has evolved through various video art projects made between 2018 and 2023, where I examined the format and style of talk shows, interviews and publicity for the media projects I was following at the time.
This work examines the ways in which acting, planning, and editing are used to create media that makes people feel personally close to actors and to media projects, building a parasocial connection to them in a way that increases their market value.
This relatively simple concept can be found all throughout the media landscape, but is especially relevant for media that discusses the queer experience, and the decision to exhibit during pride month should be therefore taken as an intentional decision to try and get people thinking about this kind of thing.
The title of the show and the names of each segment are references to the responses I've received a lot while explaining my work, a pretty common "skepticism of skepticism" that's annoyed at the overthinkers and critical analysts of the world.
I wanted to include this voice in the exhibition not in a mocking way, or to discredit it, but to show how important it is for the development of critical ideas. The "skeptic skeptics" push critics, philosophers, and social commentators of all kinds to be clear, to express their ideas more precisely, and to describe the world in a way that can become widely accepted.
